The Aliwal Urban Art Festival is back with a bang! Come as you are and soak up the fantastic vibes at Aliwal Street, courtesy of the coolest Singapore talent from street artists to punks, skaters to musicians. 

Aliwal Urban Art Festival is part of Singapore Art Week (11 – 22 January 2017). A joint initiative by the National Arts Council, the Singapore Tourism Board and the Singapore Economic Development Board, Singapore Art Week reinforces Singapore’s position as Asia’s leading arts destination. The twelve-day celebration of the visual arts offers a myriad of quality art experiences, from art fairs, gallery openings, exhibitions, lifestyle events and public art walks, to enriching discussions on art and culture.

Two dancers turned yoginis will teach effective stretching and pain management for dancers with injuries that can improve stamina and performance.

The Golden Era of Hip Hop Block Party
Aliwal Carpark | 9pm – 11pm

Kick back to the old skool with dancers Jin Neo, Ryezal and Xiao Mei as they lead the hip hop block party, accompanied by DJ Bolo on the decks. Learn classic moves like the Pepper Seed, Dougie, Reebok and Happy Feet. All are welcome, even if you have two left feet!

ANT-MEN

The Ant-Men, comprising NAztyKeys (The Good Life Project, Gentle Bones, 53A), Aaron James Lee (The Steve Mcqueens) and Timothy De Cotta (TAJ, Tim De Cotta & The Warriors), promise mind-bending, brain numbing and trip-inducing hip-hop to make you fall in love again.

DISCO HUE

Disco Hue is a live Electronic-Pop quartet influenced by the likes of Daft Punk, CHVRCHES and Ella Riot. Infectious melodies, groovy bass lines and electronic hooks abound in their debut EP Arcade, launched in Aliwal Arts Centre in 2016.

FORESTS

A riot of punchy fun, Forests is a three-piece band known for a 90s influenced emo/math-pop sound reminiscent of bands like Algernon Cadwallader, Fall of Troy and Snowing.

TOMGIRL

Mysterious dark noir pop inspired by classic thrillers, biker gangs and femme fatales, TOMGIRL combines heavy guitar riffs, fuzzy bass, pounding drums and a distinct visual aesthetic that is pure rock n’ roll.

POPTART

Poptart parties are filled with delirious fun, mad moshing, scenesters, club kids, head-bangers, and other odd characters in a blur of indie tunes anchored by residents weelikeme and KiDG.

Cherry Chan

Cherry Chan is a DJ and producer known for her eclectic selection, as well as for co-founding audiovisual collective Syndicate. An alumnus of Red Bull Music Academy, she has also performed at Low End Theory in Los Angeles, USA, and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival in Sete, France.  

E-TracX Turntablism Showcase & Workshop

One of the most established DJ schools in Asia, E-TracX presents the best turntablists of the homegrown hip hop community. Be dazzled by 17-year-old Anrev, recently crowned World Champion of The Beat Junkies. Respected turntablist and DMC Champion, Koflow will host the workshop.

Night Dives

Marcus Chong, aka Night Dives, is a music producer based in Singapore and Melbourne, whose dance floor burners challenge the conventional notion of the club track. Night Dives has been played on London’s Rinse FM and Boiler Room. Definitely one to watch for 2017.

Kiat featuring Deborah Emmanuel

Pioneer of electronic music in Asia, co-founder of Syndicate and the first Sinagporean signed to respected UK label Metalheadz, Kiat will collaborate with poet and TEDx speaker Deborah Emmanuel for the very first time on stage celebrating spoken words, beats and rhymes.

 
ALIWAL CAR PARK :: THE ASPHALT CHALLENGE

Organised by Skate SG 

Witness the fitness of Singapore’s finest skateboarders, in a display of skateboarding action. The Asphalt Challenge consists of a Skate Jam contest and the crowd favourite, the Best Trick Contest. Catch skaters competing to complete a series of heavy hitting ticks within a time limit in the jam, then hammer designated obstacles with flair, under the hawk eyes of guest judges.
